It sometimes surprises me how little we all know about the place where we live. While people spend their summer holidays overseas, how many stop to consider the delights that they are missing out on closer to home?
This is certainly the case here in the UK, where we see large numbers of tourists visiting the country each year. Despite this, we always seem keen to get away at the earliest possible opportunity.
Part of our reasoning is usually down to the weather. We feel that we can guarantee better weather overseas, hence we rush to get away each summer.
In many ways this is a shame. The UK has plenty to offer, with historic sites that are the equal of any.
We often don't take the time to appreciate the beautiful scenery that is naturally made available to us. There are so many wonderful things to see here, which I think we often fail to appreciate.
One thing that you may notice is that many motorcycle riders decide to head out on Sundays. They often travel in large groups.
I often think that they have the right idea - they are combining their love of bikes with an opportunity to make the most of what's on offer around them, whether it be to head down to the coast or to take in some rural scenery.
How much time do most of us really spend enjoying this country? The reality is that most of us lead busy lives and that spending time relaxing close to home is probably rarely at the top of the agenda.
Maybe it's time to consider this beautiful place where we live. Why don't we see it in the same way as people who come here in their millions each year?
