2008 Trends in Motorcycle Technology
Motorized bicycles that are electric are getting popular now in the US, for years these have been popular in Europe due to the high oil prices. In the US we do not call them motorcycles unless they go a certain speed and are of a certain size motor. Generally, the equivalent of 49 cc is the cut off between Moped (one category up from motorized bikes) and motorcycle. Electric moped exist and there are even electric motorcycles now available in the US although they are a little heavy compared to the race bikes of gasoline powered motorcycles.
Speaking of Crotch Rocket race bikes have more and more carbon composites in them, for better performance, of course, the lighter and more efficient the more power, speed and performance per gallon, more fuel efficient. Yes, believe it or not the fuel efficiency trend has hit the two-wheel market too!
Hydrogen Cell motorcycles are very trendy this year, but not readily available in the US, as there is really no way to fuel them up. But maybe you can save fuel by better routing? Motorcycle GPS units are getting much better as well.
New innovative designs in 3-wheel high-tech choppers are becoming popular, and can be ridden by those who do not feel as safe on two-wheels. Folks like the looks of these trikes and they are a good alternative to four-wheelers.
Since, sales are up by 300% for motorcycles, there is much more money available for R and D. Some higher end motorcycles now have air-bags available and some futuristic folks are predicting personal flying vehicles based on the motorcycle design, fly off into the sunset without your wheels touching the ground. It's a great year in the industry.
